Yuba City Teen Mental Health IOP & PHP Day Program: Adolescent Care Announced

Families across Northern California now have access to updated mental health programs through California Teen Center, a DHCS-licensed and Joint Commission-accredited provider serving teens ages 12 to 17 in Yuba City, Sutter County, Yuba County, and surrounding communities. The center's Teen Intensive Outpatient Program has been updated to expand structured care options for adolescents, alongside a Virtual IOP that extends access to families throughout California.

California Teen Center's programs are designed for teens who need more structure than weekly therapy but do not require residential or inpatient placement. Treatment may include individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, and psychiatric oversight, with academic coordination available to help teens maintain school progress during treatment. The center also offers a PHP/Day Program, outpatient therapy, and step-down support for adolescents transitioning home after a higher level of care.

National data from the Health Resources and Services Administration shows the scale of the challenge: in 2023, more than 5.3 million adolescents ages 12 to 17 — over 20% of that age group — had a diagnosed mental or behavioral health condition. Between 2016 and 2023, diagnosed anxiety among teens increased by 61% and diagnosed depression rose by 45%, according to the same agency.

These numbers point to a growing population of teens who need timely, effective support. California Teen Center's coordinated care model is designed to meet families at different stages, from teens struggling with school refusal, self-harm, or trauma to those transitioning home after a psychiatric hospitalization. Families with immediate safety concerns are encouraged to call 988, contact emergency services, or go to the nearest emergency room.

"Many families reach out after spending months feeling like they have run out of options," a California Teen Center spokesperson said. "Our goal is to provide a clear next step for struggling teens, with the right level of structure and compassionate support to help them begin moving forward."

California Teen Center works with major insurance providers including Anthem, Blue Shield of California, Carelon, and Aetna, and provides insurance verification assistance to help families understand their coverage. The center's family-centered model keeps parents and guardians actively involved at every stage of their teen's treatment and recovery.

The center's Virtual IOP is designed to deliver the same structured care as its in-person programs, with sessions conducted through a secure telehealth platform accessible from anywhere in California. This format allows teens to participate in treatment without requiring families to travel, making consistent care more practical for those in rural or underserved communities across Northern California.
